For years I talked about working with a coach. It was always something I thought that maybe would be helpful but I wasn’t sure how or where or when. I didn’t know who to talk to or how it would be different than seeing a therapist (hint: it’s totally different). I was hesitant because well frankly it’s a big investment of time, money and here’s the kicker: trust.

Trust is one of those things that may not come easy to all of you out there reading and following along. That’s okay. It wasn’t always (and truly still isn’t always) easy for me either. There are many reasons that bring us to distrust our surroundings, the people in our lives, and even ourselves at times. Sometimes in order to move forward in life, we have to take a leap of faith. We have to step outside of ourselves, and outside of our comfort zone.

Another concern I had before I started working with a coach, and now I hear from others, is time. So many of us fear investing in ourselves. Whether it is taking time or money or space or energy to give to ourselves. We put our own happiness and joy at the end of the list while we pile on our efforts for everyone around us. It is draining and ends up removing us from our own lives in a way we don’t necessarily even recognize.

When we are willing to risk putting aside our distrust, and our fear of spending time and money on ourselves, we can start implementing change in our lives. Taking those first few steps can be the hardest. It is the initial path to breaking through the long standing barriers and limiting beliefs we hold. Those limitations keep us from doing whatever it is that will bring us to our highest purpose. That is not to say that the journey will be easy later, but once you get the process started it is certainly easier to keep it going.

Once I broke through my own defenses and reasons why not, working with a coach became one of the most incredible things I have ever gifted myself. It gave me clarity and insight into myself. It opened doors into new ideas and ways of looking at the world. My coach helped me recenter and refocus on my goals and purpose. And I carry that focus forward continually recentering and setting my intentions.
